Deleted subjects

A schema registry supports two kinds of deletion. A soft delete hides a subject or schema version from regular listings, but the registry keeps the data and still serves it on request. A permanent (hard) delete removes the data from the registry irrecoverably.

Backing up deleted subjects

A SchemaRegistryBackup includes soft-deleted subjects and soft-deleted schema versions. Permanently deleted subjects cannot be recovered from the registry and are not included.

This means a soft delete on the registry does not remove data from an existing backup, and the backup can be used to recover subjects that were soft-deleted by accident.

Restoring deleted subjects

A SchemaRegistryRestore restores every schema present in the Storage. Subjects that were soft-deleted at backup time are registered again and become active subjects on the target registry.
